What is the Canary Telling You?

Safety is the canary in the productivity coal mine. We have all heard the term “The canary in the coal mine,” an allusion to caged canaries that mining workers would carry down into the mine tunnels with them. If dangerous gases such as methane or carbon monoxide leaked into the mine, the gases would kill the canary before killing the miners, thus providing a warning to exit the tunnels immediately. In our discussion today, the canary is the customer’s safety issue, the coal mine is the customer application, and the miners are the customer’s...

School’s Out for Summer, but Work Isn’t: How to Stay Productive During the Lazy days of Summer?

Working during the summer comes with its own unique set of challenges. Co-workers are sharing plans, stories and pictures of their tropical vacations and weekend getaways. Commutes become hotter, longer and sweatier. Out-of-the-office email responses are more frequent, and there’s a near constant distraction of warm weather and the wish to get outside. When summer comes, are you left choosing whether you or your work suffers? Laura Lee Rose, a business and life coach, says, “The idea isn’t to ‘ignore’ or deny yourself [in order] to stay...

Productivity May 2014

This month we have an update from the PIT Crew. The Process Improvement Team has been focusing on improving service to both our customers and our vendors. They recently tackled the Purchase Orders with our vendor, Vinatronics. One issue is customer service reps having to take a lot of time to research where a PO is in our system and this can really slow down the expediting process. The PIT Crew worked out a solution that allows the PO to remain accessible in the system so that when the product arrives, the warehouse can give the product to...

Looking at Pictures of Kittens Increases Productivity

April Fool’s, or Not? A recent article in the Washington Post reported on a Japanese study that tested productivity and accuracy after looking at a variety of pictures. Students participating in the study performed best after looking at pictures of baby animals. Other trials included looking at pleasant food, human babies and adult animals, but something about baby animals, in particular, lead to better performance at a Japanese game similar to Operation. Does this mean you should spend hours of your work day looking at funny cat...

It’s No Joke – Laughing is Good for You!

What news could be better? Beyond the obvious benefit of having fun or being happy, the act of laughing is seriously good for our bodies. According to WebMD, “we change physiologically when we laugh. We stretch muscles throughout our face and body, our pulse and blood pressure go up, and we breathe faster, sending more oxygen to our tissues.” Much like yoga and cardio workouts, laughter gives us an immediate boost feel from increased blood flow. Laughing burns calories, too, but you’d have to laugh for 12 hours straight to lose a pound of...

Looking for Work-Life Balance?

Work-Life Balance is a something that we have all been talking about for awhile, but what is it? Is it a sweet spot where we are happy at work and able to enjoy a happy, healthy life outside of work? Or is it something that we strive for, but never achieve. One recent suggestion is that we need to look at work as an integrated part of our life rather than pitting work against life. According to an article in Forbes online magazine, we need to “move from work-life balance to work-life energy.” Primarily because of smart phones, there is a push...

The Importance of Error Reporting

The Importance of Error Reporting

How can filling out a form improve my productivity? Documenting our mistakes is somewhat counter intuitive. It is human nature to want to move forward as quickly as possible and put that mistake behind us. In addition, we are all busy and taking time out from our regular duties to fill out an error report may feel like a waste of time. Ironically, the busier we are, the more mistakes we make. A great way to break this pattern is to take time out to reflect on your processes. Filling out an error report is a good way to do that. It is...
