Stress and Hypertension

May is blood pressure awareness month. One common complication of blood pressure is hypertension (high blood pressure) which is when your blood pressure is higher than normal (systolic >140 and/or diastolic >90) for a long period of time. Why does high blood pressure matter? According to the American Heart Association: 77% of Americans treated for a first stroke have blood pressure over 140/90. 69% of Americans who have a first heart attack have blood pressure over 140/90. 74% of Americans with congestive heart failure have blood pressure...

Productivity May 2014

This month we have an update from the PIT Crew. The Process Improvement Team has been focusing on improving service to both our customers and our vendors. They recently tackled the Purchase Orders with our vendor, Vinatronics. One issue is customer service reps having to take a lot of time to research where a PO is in our system and this can really slow down the expediting process. The PIT Crew worked out a solution that allows the PO to remain accessible in the system so that when the product arrives, the warehouse can give the product to...

Safety with Barry – Success can mean a Broken Toe!

Safety with Barry – Success can mean a Broken Toe!

I met a gentleman the other day that broke his spine, lumbar L5, as a result of a fall. The mechanism of injury was from a slip, which occurred at 268 feet in the air inside a Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) nacelle. Not the most practical place for a spinal injury! As he was standing there, at work, recalling the event he commented that ‘”his broken toe was one of the most significant parts of the event.” Huh? Inner Safety Ninja, “How does one fracture a spine and a toe in a WTG in one day?” His ENSA trained co-workers/rescuers immediately...

Looking at Pictures of Kittens Increases Productivity

April Fool’s, or Not? A recent article in the Washington Post reported on a Japanese study that tested productivity and accuracy after looking at a variety of pictures. Students participating in the study performed best after looking at pictures of baby animals. Other trials included looking at pleasant food, human babies and adult animals, but something about baby animals, in particular, lead to better performance at a Japanese game similar to Operation. Does this mean you should spend hours of your work day looking at funny cat...

Safety With Barry – Been There, Done That, Got the Tee-Shirt: Experience

“Shanghai McCoy’s my name. I’ve sailed the seven seas, been around the horn, I’ve seen everything, I’ve done everything and that’s how I know.” Those are a few lines from a classic movie “Rooster Cogburn.” Now the character Shanghai is what we in the biz would call a self-proclaimed “Subject Matter Expert” (SME). His knowledge came from his experiences. Somewhere down the line you’ve probably asked someone, how did they acquire their knowledge? Perhaps you heard, “Oh, I went to the school of Hard Knocks.” My family will tell you that I have a...

It’s No Joke – Laughing is Good for You!

What news could be better? Beyond the obvious benefit of having fun or being happy, the act of laughing is seriously good for our bodies. According to WebMD, “we change physiologically when we laugh. We stretch muscles throughout our face and body, our pulse and blood pressure go up, and we breathe faster, sending more oxygen to our tissues.” Much like yoga and cardio workouts, laughter gives us an immediate boost feel from increased blood flow. Laughing burns calories, too, but you’d have to laugh for 12 hours straight to lose a pound of...
