Safety is our Mission: Avoiding the Perfect Storm

At Mallory Safety and Supply, safety is always on our minds. We make safety a priority for ourselves and our customers. Even so, recently, a case of burn spray shipped via air to Alaska amongst a large pick and hold. This shipment was tucked inside a full pallet of material. Burn spray contains propane, which is a flammable and a big no-no for air shipments. It has an innocuous sounding ORM-D label that doesn’t scream HAZMAT like some products, yet, under the right/wrong circumstances, could contribute to a plane crash! It is a reminder to...

Safety with Barry – SPIDER

Ok, I am not a big fan of arachnids however, sometimes during my travels, I run into something that is worth sharing. I take no credit for the catchy acronym, but since Spiderman is sort of like a Safety Ninja, I thought I would pass this along. This works and it is interesting how many times a day you could apply this at work or home! When addressing a hazard use the acronym “Spider”. Here is how it goes:   Stop:  Stop yourself or others around you. Sometimes folks don’t see or understand the hazards around them.   Protect: ...

Safety with Barry – Shock Not Advised!

Those are words you may here if you are you using an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) followed by the voice prompt begin Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Generally speaking we see AED in public places such as; airports, schools, arenas and quite often in the work place. They are easy to use and will prompt you as the appropriate action you should take if you are providing basic life support while waiting for emergency medical professionals. They are not magic boxes and you should not be afraid to use one! CPR also is not hard and is...

Safety with Barry – Success can mean a Broken Toe!

Safety with Barry – Success can mean a Broken Toe!

I met a gentleman the other day that broke his spine, lumbar L5, as a result of a fall. The mechanism of injury was from a slip, which occurred at 268 feet in the air inside a Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) nacelle. Not the most practical place for a spinal injury! As he was standing there, at work, recalling the event he commented that ‘”his broken toe was one of the most significant parts of the event.” Huh? Inner Safety Ninja, “How does one fracture a spine and a toe in a WTG in one day?” His ENSA trained co-workers/rescuers immediately...

Safety With Barry – Been There, Done That, Got the Tee-Shirt: Experience

“Shanghai McCoy’s my name. I’ve sailed the seven seas, been around the horn, I’ve seen everything, I’ve done everything and that’s how I know.” Those are a few lines from a classic movie “Rooster Cogburn.” Now the character Shanghai is what we in the biz would call a self-proclaimed “Subject Matter Expert” (SME). His knowledge came from his experiences. Somewhere down the line you’ve probably asked someone, how did they acquire their knowledge? Perhaps you heard, “Oh, I went to the school of Hard Knocks.” My family will tell you that I have a...

Safety with Barry – Ice Ice Crazy

Ok, so I realize that by the time this goes to print that the “Ice Events” will probably have come and gone and the only thing left to discuss is that nasty eye infection Bob Costas tried to soldier through during Winter Olympics on T.V. However, the topic of slips and trips is just too good to pass up; this month’s article practically writes itself with the exception of some audible cartoon noises. From Seattle to Atlanta and from Lake Superior to Houston it seems that everyone is getting a good dose of “Old man winter.” What is troublesome...

Safety with Barry – The 12th Man

Watching the NFC Championship game this weekend I have to admit the crowd at CenturyLink was impressive! I can only imagine the sound that 72,000 fanatic Seahawk’s fans can create! I’m sure the 49ers would tell you that the sound was noise or rather, “unwanted sound.” Either way the crowd noise was a factor in the results! Here at Mallory, Safety is our “12th Man.” Creating a safe work environment for ourselves and our customers touches everything we do and makes a big difference in our outcomes. While the subject of hearing conservation is...

Safety with Barry – Feeling Lucky?

That was steely eyed detective “Dirty Harry” Callahan’s question to the unsavory bad guy in movie. If I remember correctly, the bad guy took his chance and found out that “Dirty Harry” did have one more bullet after all. So, when it comes to Safety, ask yourself if you are feeling lucky. How many chances do you take before your luck runs out? I don’t need eye protection I can stack that one higher Ground plugs, electrical, are a luxury The guard on the grinder just gets in the way I’m not going to fall Most accidents result from individuals...

Safety with Barry

Barry Morris is an ENSA trainer and is helping out with Mallory’s safety effort. As 2013 wraps up, everyone at Mallory Safety and Supply has, I’m sure, began planning for the holidays and 2014. Just about everyone has a Tablet/PC/Smart Phone to help them with their schedules and planning, what’s going to get done today, next week, next month and even year from now. We all make plans. There is one thing however, that none of us plan for, that is an accident! Just last week, as I was driving home from work, a white tail deer assaulted me. When...

Hang Up and Drive!

Hang Up and Drive!

We live in an age where everything is urgent, “I have to take this call/text/email NOW!” is something we’ve all felt at one time or another. Constant availability has become an expectation both at work and with family and friends, but constant connectivity can be distracting and distracted driving leads to accidents. Last year 3,328 deaths were attributed to distracted driving and an estimated 421,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver. Of course texting and talking on the phone are major problems, but...
